What’s happening in this video…The floor coatings being applied is an epoxy floor coating system [Garon Stoncast™ 1S] comprised of four coats.

This industrial concrete floor coatings sytem includes a prime coat of epoxy [Tigerskin™] at 3 mils applied with a 3/8″ hair nap roller, then a coat of  epoxy [Tigerbond™ 221 Ultra] at 16 mils with a flat squeegee and 1/4″ hair nap roller.

Aggregate [Garon Grit™ 120] is then broadcast into the Tigerbond™ 221 Ultra immeditately to refusal at .5 lbs per sq ft.  A second coat of Tigerbond™ 221 Ultra is applied with a flat rubber squeegee followed by  1/4″ hair nap roller 8 hours later or until the coating has tacked off.

The addition of Garon Grit™ 120 will thicken the slip resistant floor coating system from 35 mils to 65 mils (1/16″ thick) at a very minimal added expense.

An optional addition of a urethane finish coat [Hi-Gloss™] served as an extra anti slip floor treatment layer to give it even more of a slip resistant flooring surface.

Wherever walking, notice that surface conditions vary greatly. Most of us take for granted that we are walking on safe surfaces, yet the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports on the many accidents that occur every year in the work place.

Most of the time no one thinks about the surfaces that we walk on and seldom consider them being slippery which, of course, is a relative term and probably means different things to different people. There is, however, no such thing as non-slip floors.

Is the surface an incline or on a decline? Are we climbing stairs? More cause for worry. How fast do we travel over these wet surfaces? We could be jogging along or otherwise in a hurry. What about the weather conditions? Has there been a recent freeze?

Chances are that someone has thought through all of these questions as they pertain to any given pedestrian trafficked surface.

Architects and Safety Engineers address these anti-slip matters every day. They do it by evaluating the floor surface conditions in every environment and specifying slip resistant coatings for floor safety or anti-slip flooring mats, or other non ski material products.

The anti-slip floor protection solutions are many. Look around and you’ll begin to notice them. Anti slip products are applied everywhere. They can be non-slip coatings for wood, concrete non-slip coatings, coatings in restaurant kitchens, especially near walkways, for tile floors and also for coating metal.

The next stairway you use in a public building will likely have anti-slip stair treads or abrasive anti-slip floor coatings that are installed during construction or later in the form of a custom aluminum stair treads measured and cut to size.

Look closely and you’ll see abrasive aggregates embedded in the tread. It’s bad enough to fall but no one wants to fall down stairs.

Often during the construction phase of a project, concrete floors are given a broom finish by literally pulling a broom across the surface to provide grips for safer footing, particularly under wet conditions. This process is an alternate to application of anti slip concrete coatings.

Coatings that contain abrasive grit are used on floor surfaces everywhere. The aggregate is sized for the relative aggressiveness required.

These coatings can be found around swimming pools, shower rooms where bare footed traffic is expected or in more aggressive or rougher coatings in areas such as ramps, shipping docks and around hazardous areas. The most aggressive of these coatings can be found on aircraft carriers and marine vessels.

Another manner of incorporating anti slip grit is employed when “broadcasting” aggregate into wet non slip floor coatings or paint. There is usually another coating applied after the application to “lock in” the slightly protruding aggregates.

So the next time you go for a walk, take note of the surface engineering performed to keep you safe and standing upright.
